As much as I wish I could agree that he pulled through…
First paragraph: great. If only the post ended here.
Second paragraph: I’m gonna… uhm… increase the coordination with the repressive state apparatus to Increase Safety™.
Third paragraph: Anyways, we as New Yorkers don’t really have to fear any retaliation from Iran, so no worries, you can go back to brunch after you express your dissent on social media.
And don’t get me wrong. It IS a genuine improvement over “Maduro is a dictator” approach to US foreign policy, so critical support is due.
This is the best you will get from an american politician, be glad he is not condemning Iran for defending itself!
Exactly.
I took the 2nd paragraph meaning as protecting infrastructure/public works like power, water, hospitals, etc. A call out for those worried that went through 9/11 kinda thing. I’ve lived in an area where those have been attacked and the disruption of one incident can lasts weeks from a single bullet. Emergency management officials and commissioner are the two key points and this is a city mayor, not state senator or federal leanings.
edit to add: also meant to include religious and anything that might be loosely related to Iran or culture from the area (bigots don’t tend to scrutinize connections), leaving it as “sensitive locations” is better than specifically spelling out where extra protection is being laid out to any bad actors wanting to instigate.
Third paragraph: Anyways, we as New Yorkers don’t really have to fear any retaliation from Iran, so no worries, you can go back to brunch after you express your dissent on social media.
I also read it that way on a first pass because I missed the “Iranian” in “Iranian New Yorkers”. He’s probably referring to the likely surge in hate crimes against Iranians that’s bound to happen, and that he’ll (allegedly) work to prevent it.
This is a true leader of the people!!!
So sensible, clear and direct response to the recent events.
I don’t trust any American politician in a position of power (because I’ve seen what America does to leaders they don’t like around the world…) but I’m glad he’s said it, even if it’s just “his brand” and he doesn’t really care. Someone’s got to speak some sense, for whatever reason it might be.
Illegal war of aggression
He said the words. He also didn’t fumble around doing a both-sidesy condemnation of Iran. As far as I’m aware, that’s already the best comment on a US war for a elected US politician this Century.
