I think the “proper” way to simplify it is would’ve, which is pronounced the same as ‘would of’

A lot of mistakes have just become incorporated into the language in the past. Maybe ‘would of’ is just too blatantly wrong for that to ever happen though

Maybe not really a ‘mistake’, more of a normal shortening but my personal favorite english-ism is “bye” being descended directly from “god be with you”. People just kept collapsing it more and more over time.

I have a laptop with 4gb ram that i’ve been using kde plasma on and fairly frequently it just freezes or I have to restart because I had like 6 tabs open in firefox

I’ve never had a similar problem with chrome on chromeos with the same amount of ram, I think chrome+chromeos might be more aggressive with unloading tabs

Sometimes it does actually kill firefox but sometimes it just becomes very slow (1-2 seconds per frame) or freezes entirely for several minutes when out of memory. Might be just because the swap is really slow, but there’s just 2gb of that, why would it freeze for several minutes? (One time this was happening was when I was trying to compile llvm on two threads, I ended up having to temporarily kill the desktop environment to save ram)

I feel like the pictures over-exaggerate the difference a bit. The wright flyer was literally made by two people in their spare time while the space program was around 4% of all federal spending and had almost half a million people working on it in some capacity.

I got a HDD very recently for a backup drive for my server and I’m very happy with that decision. 8 tb, lightly used but an enterprise drive, for $100.

Modern AAA games above 1440p and high settings usually can use that much VRAM.

8gb of ram is also not enough for anything particularly heavy.

The demo scene is still around, although it’s maybe less popular. That was a demo scene thing, not a commercial game.

Also, iirc, it was very heavy on performance for the time because the procedural textures were so expensive.

Desmos scientific calculator isn’t open source but it is what I end up using most of the time. It just does float stuff though, it can’t handle something like (10^100+1)-10100

It also doesn’t support nearly as many features as the graphing calculator does, for some reason. But it formats everything very nicely and you can copy and paste as latex

Arch also can absolutely be installed just as quickly as any other distro if you use the archinstall script. I used it recently to install KDE plasma onto a Chromebook from 2017 and everything worked exactly as expected, I haven’t had any issues with stability so far. Can absolutely be done in under half an hour. It ofc doesn’t come with the advantage of understanding exactly how your system is set up, like you would if you did it yourself.

The last time I did that (slightly different setup with xfce) though I broke it somehow and ended up with if freezing often when booting, although I’m still not sure if that was a hardware problem or not, but it doesn’t seem to be happening anymore. I also broke something with the audio jack somehow around then during an update, but chromebooks have weird audio drivers and you need to use this script maintained by (afaik) one person in their spare time. Anyways I would expect a framework laptop to handle it better as it’s newer and more common hardware.

OpenAI could use less hardware to get similar performance if they used the Chinese version, but they already have enough hardware to run their model.

Theoretically the best move for them would be to train their own, larger model using the same technique (as to still fully utilize their hardware) but this is easier said than done.
