  • And 1/2c is a pretty middle of the road escape velocity for a neutron star.

The lightest known neutron star, at 1.4 solar masses has an escape velocity of right around 1/4c, while the heaviest at 2.35 solar masses is 3/4c.

All of which assumes the neutron star isn’t spinning. Equatorial bulging caused by the rotation reduces the escape velocity at the equator relative to the poles and depending on whether or not you launch with the direction of the rotation you might be able to subtract the rotational velocity from your escape velocity.

As an example, in the case of that 2.35 solar mass neutron star, it has a rotational velocity of approximately 0.24c. So of you launch with the rotation you get an escape velocity of 0.5c, whereas if you launch against it you’re looking at more like 0.98c.

  • A 2011 GMC Terrain. It burned oil like none other. The power steering would occasionally just not work upon starting the car, requiring me to turn it off and on again a several times. Sometimes, I’d stop at a red light, the engine would die, and when I’d restart it it’d go into limp mode. And traction control and AWD would occasionally just give out, which can be dangerous where I live due to ice and snow.

The thing was a hazard and GMC and all associated brands can fuck right off.

I like to be able to sing along to songs when I’m alone in the car, so even if I don’t understand the meaning of the words, I like to know the words.

I also enjoy word play, and Du Hast has some of that. So knowing the bit of trivia about ‘Hast’ and ‘Hasst’ being homophones in German and meaning ‘have’ and ‘hate’ respectively, and the main portion of the lyrics being wedding vows adds a layer of enjoyment to the song for me.

  • My experience has been that 1440p is noticeable jump in quality on desktop monitors but less so laptops. On desktop 4K is virtually unnoticeable, a high refresh rate, HDR, and OLED are far more noticeable.

For TV, I’ve found that it depends more on distance from the screen and resolution and bit rate of the media. I sit about 8’ from a 65” 4K tv and the difference between Blu-ray quality at 1080p and 4K is night and day.

  • Bookworm, Trixie, and Sid all currently support a total of 10 different architectures.

And looking through the Wikipedia article for Debian’s version history, most of the dropped architectures were functionally obsolete when they were dropped, or like the Motorola 68000, when support was added. (notable exceptions being IA-64 which was dropped 4 years before intel discontinued it, SPARC which is still supported by Oracle, and PowerPC.)
