they were reading out loud to other people who could not read most of the time. At that point it would just be habit because its so unoften one would read alone.

Is this surprising to anyone. Reading/writing being a common skill in the populace is a relatively recent phenomenon.

The comments make this sound like its unbelievable but im pretty sure all types of stupid shit has happened in every armed forces. There is a decently number of stupid humans and armed forces likely a larger percentage.

chicago. I mean there are some old buildings where they exist but not on my commute. I would be bowled over if any el stations had them.

I have only seen them with a bit of a retro thing with watches or digital emulations of them for easily over a decade and the only reason I saw any in early 2000 is because I worked at a school.

I often look at it as when kids were unlikely to encounter any analogue things regularly. Did you have analogue clocks and phones for any period? The only problem with my definition is schools kept analogue clocks around for long after you would not see them anywhere else.

PhD stipends have never allowed for house buying in my time period at least. All the same people compete for it.

this is ridiculous. hsa funds are used by people of modest means in the year it is taken out. If any is saved its in simple interest or very conservative investments. if you lucky enough to not have health care costs for enough years, then you can start investing like its an ira which it actually is. In retirment it can be used for any purpose.
