No advantages privacy-wise, but it’s like a seedbox! I keep the torrent client running. Also I’m on a limited mobile data plan on my router at home, so this helps.
When I found out you could get a free 200GB VPS (look up free tier vps) - and because I had another paid VPS already anyway - I decided to make a seedbox. It’s not a ton of storage but it works really well, very happy with it.
VPN on VPS (easy to do with gluetun)
Basically you use a container that’s a VPN connection and connect other containers to it.
ProtonVPN has started to become blocked on tons of websites. I have to switch servers all the time, to the point I won’t be able to keep a VPN connection up like I used to.
I’ve read Mullvad has worsened as well. There seems to be a general ban on VPN use (there was always some of course)
My last hope: non profits who offer VPN. They keep logs, don’t allow torrenting, and require a real name to subscribe. Very few server choices, if any.
I’m… fine with that. I just want privacy. No surveillance. And I trust the non profit. Plus I torrent on a VPS anyway
What I would like to see are local VPNs, with a small enough pool of users on each server to not get flagged. A rotation between servers from time to time. Compliant with the law of course (as long as the law doesn’t require total surveillance, evidently). The goal is to hide everyone’s activity from the providers and websites (yes, I know, fingerprinting)
But maybe there’s some other existing tool/service I’m not aware of?

They’re really skittish and will run away when I’m around, and tend to stay on the walls. Chances are you won’t ever touch them by accident.
So I’m fine sharing the house.
Also I never seen more than one at a time. It hardly feels like an invasion
The menus are definitely busy and confusing (there are many options), but once it’s set up I’ve never been bothered by the UI. I quite like how emails are shown OOTB in fact, with the right padding and day separation; I also use most buttons that are offered by default. So yeah, sane defaults.

I rent a small VPS, so I could use that. Although my connection is really shitty I wouldn’t want it to load every time I open a new tab
I do that and it works really well, but you still need to use Mozilla’s servers for authentification. But it’s been a while so maybe there’s a way to host that too now.
I bought a second hand Surface Pro 5 (2017), running Fedora gnome
I’ve started to write a review because I couldn’t really find one, and most of the comments are over the top positive (as it often goes on Linux forums I’ve come to realize). It’s not done yet
But I can summarize it: as a tablet it’s not great but it mostly works. It’s certainly not for someone not ready to troubleshoot, and many problems have no, or no great solutions. Also gnome used with touch has a major bug (which, again, nobody ever mentions for some reason. It will be in my review)
As a 2 in 1 with little touch use it could be alright. The pen is quite good if you want to draw or write, even though there’s a small delay. The cover is okay, but you’re better of with a quality laptop keyboard and big trackpad
I bought it mainly for reading, mostly European format comics (bandes dessinées). The resolution is great for that, and the size is good with a reader that removes white margins
Edit: to give you an idea I bought it for 190€ two months ago, with all accessories, good condition and good battery health (which does not mean battery life is good)

CEMU and BotW worked great. Yuzu wasn’t really working at the time but maybe it’s the better option now?
