Tor is definitely another option. For my personal use however, I have my entire network covered by a VPN so all outgoing traffic uses it.

I’m sure I could setup Tor to do the same, but I imagine my family and I would get blocked more heavily on sites, as well as get our bank accounts and such flagged or something.

Like many things, it obviously depends on your threat model.

Ultimately being truly anonymous on the internet is pretty hard, and thus VPNs are mostly helpful for getting around region blocks for streaming services, not for obtaining more privacy.

There seems to constantly be two sides of the privacy discussion with public VPN options and they’re both wrong on their own. It’s correct that using a VPN on its own is not enough to keep you private online, fingerprinting being one example to why. However, not using a VPN but having no identifiable browser fingerprint doesn’t either, since your IP is still a fingerprint too.

I like to give the following analogies:

1. Doing only an oil change on your vehicle but no other maintenance won’t keep your vehicle running forever
2. Doing all vehicle maintenances except oil changes won’t keep your vehicle running forever

If the goal is to be private, remember that a VPN is only one tool in a very large tool belt.

I have forks that are updated every night through a cron for these very reasons. But I didn’t ever set it up for Android apps… Time to fork a whole lot more projects. sigh

Unnecessary rant: I actually just had to downgrade my 575(?) driver after spending a few days trying to troubleshoot a freezing laptop. One day I walked away when it happen and that actually gave me the logs I needed to find the Nvidia driver was freezing the machine and then spitting logs out after giving up 10 minutes later (but still keeping things frozen). Was driving me nuts, thinking my hard drive was seeing the light, even though all tests for it were passing with flying colors!

I’m hesitant to try this new version since I didn’t see anything in the changelog about freeze fixes lol.

Man, we just can’t win with these UI tools, I also thought Bruno was the solution. Only use it on my work machine so that’s why I guess I never noticed this. Thank you for sharing, time to go back to digging for better alternatives.

PATH="${PATH}:~/.local/bin"

To your .zhrc or .bashrc (whatever you use) and either source the file or open a new terminal. Should be as simple as that (assuming +x permissions)

Rather than leave another long reply to read, I’ll leave my thoughts simple: if you have another computer you’re not using, try Linux mint and see if it fits your needs. If it’s too much and you can’t get the time needed to figure things out, 11 might be the choice (for now).

But either way, keep Linux on the second and learn a little bit as you get time to! :)

They’re blocking my VPN connection… I’ve already got problems with this lol.

Hmm I’ll have to check this later as I don’t remember ever running into that problem since my Xbox internal has been full for a while. But I also wonder if that applies to physical copies or not since all my series x games are physical. Unless Xbox does this automatically in the background without user intervention, then I may have not noticed

Weird, I have a regular old 2TB (or maybe it was 1?) western digital plugged into the USB on the back of my series x and it works fine, not sure I understand the need to spend a bunch on something like this. Edit: and before responding about speed… I haven’t noticed much, if any, difference in game performance from installing on the drive or external outside of the initial game loading (startup) time, so not sure if that’s the only benefit to using the expansion slot.

I’ve been using the fdroid syncthing-fork version for a long time now and haven’t had any issues at all… Doesn’t mean it’ll last forever but it’s been getting the job done for me even in its current state.

… And can’t remember my original reason to use the fork instead lol

Thanks for clarifying! Took a deeper look on my computer and I guess I learned that NoScript was misidentifying due to the cors or something. Just had to call it out before, as one can never be too careful these days :D

The NoScript list terrifies me a little though… Not sure what’s going on there, but that’s a lot of JavaScript lol.

I also use Linux mint with cinnamon… Is this not just the Ctrl + Fn + arrow key? I think that’s it, or maybe shift (not at my computer to check). Either way, I use this all the time to fit windows either on 50% of the left or right, or in one of the 4 corners. For example, if I want it in the top right, I just use the hot keys and target right then up.

Other than that, I’ve got a bunch of other security feeds I follow and also have automated updates with just about everything.

I’d do my part in buying games from them more if they didn’t block my home network from their website lol. Yes it’s behind a VPN, and no I’m not turning it off to give up my privacy just to buy something I can get from stores that won’t block me.

I honestly used to buy games from them a lot, but once their website became inaccessible, I sorta forgot about them. Surely I’m not the only one right…?

I’m a Linux mint user for my main system and am no beginner. As others have said, it’s friendly to both beginners and advanced users, it’s good to see you’ve made that choice.

That being said, don’t stop there. Whether it’s in a virtual machine or some old laptop, also try one of the “from scratch” systems. I went with Gentoo and that is the root of where a ton of my Linux knowledge started. It’s my favorite distro simply because it has that history for me. You’ll find everyone has their own favorites for their own reasons, so be sure to explore and find the one that you enjoy and helps you learn.
