Contact lenses. I know I could use my glasses, but I put them down and can’t find them half the time. I am blind enough to be absolutely useless in most situations without corrective lenses.
Hot water on demand. Coming in from the cold and getting a hot shower. That is so wonderful.
I forgot to add a /s after that sentence. I know teachers are severely understaffed and underfunded. This 4 day workweek seems like it would be wonderful with the exception of the people deemed too vital not to work. Just like during covid, some people will have a better time being paid to stay home, and others will have to continue working for the same pay. The burden would certainly fall on teachers, doctors, nurses, construction workers, maintenance personnel, and any other job that has a short supply of workers and high demand. Before switching to this system, our society would need to consider how to handle this problem.
Exactly! When I first read this post, I thought it was sarcasm. Firstly, the assumption that a 4 day work week is innevitable. And second, if we were gifted such a massive win, the loss of the dreaded “Monday” would not matter because it is just an arbitrary name. There will still be an end to the weekend and start to the week.
I get the feeling certain jobs are going to be deemed too vital to move to a 4 day work week. Unless there are enough teachers to rotate shifts.
Tuesday would immediately become the new Monday and everyone would get the Monday scaries. The start of a series of work days will always be a bummer, no matter what you call it.
Those meddling Google Debunkers!
The belief in the existence of a super-race (or whatever term Hancock uses) is dubious. While the idea on its own may seem harmless, it opens the door for racist idealogies. Everything has to be taken in context, and crackpot archeologists have been making this argument for ages in order to justify later arguments for eugenics.
I know it may appear that Hancock questioning the established historians and “big archeology” is above suspicion, but it is done in an unambiguously dishonest way. He refuses to acknowledge sound logical arguments put forth by multiple well-respected sources and hand waves things away as common sense. Essentially, he is frustrating because his arguments muddy the waters of logical discussions and introduce doubt in a community that certainly does not get paid enough for this shit.
I was torn between the use of misinformation and disinformation. And comments on Lemmy are often speaking into a void, so I honestly did not think it would matter. I appreciate the clarification and agree that misinformation is more appropriate. But agree that falling for misinformation leads to disinformation.
This is the danger of celebrity endorsement. It will bring so much more attention to an unworthy ‘cause’, and so many fans will now absorb this information without critical thought. It is truly a situation where a well-intentioned person does not know enough to understand that this supposed expert is talking nonsense and the world at large slips that much further into disinformation.
What is the point of being self-aware if the only thing you are aware of is your inadequacies and failures? We need validation in order to keep going.
That was part we were confused by! I literally asked my coworkers before I called the cops if this was some sort of prank they were playing on me because no one else had access to the area and it just seemed like something out of a cheesy mystery novel. When the police opened the bag and it was just clothes I was so relieved, but the roll being inside was weird. Like someone either had another roll of tape for the outside, or they preeemtively cut a length off before putting the roll inside. Who knows. I wonder if I’ll ever get a call about it, but suppose no news is good news.
A similar situation happened to me! DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING Call the non emergency number! If they are annoyed that they came out and it winds up being garbage, who cares? At least you didn’t ignore something potentially very important.
In my case, it was a suitcase that had duct tape around it. That showed up overnight. I called local cops first that sent guys out that seemed bored, honestly. And my heart was racing as I answered questions. When they opened the bag, it had ripped clothes and a half used roll of duct tape. The local PD literally said “well, we don’t have a crime we can match this to.” They started to leave without the bag and I was confused why they wouldn’t at least take it for evidence? I have watched too many episodes of CSI, cold case etc and was freaking out. They left. I guess they just want to make money on traffic stops.
I couldn’t leave the situation there, and a friend knew someone in the State Police. After a few phone calls I got in touch with a detective. Who was very confused that the local cops had handled the situation like that. He arrived and took the bag into evidence and got my information. As far as I know, nothing ever came of it.
Regulations would help, but create their own hurdles.
The youtuber Technology Connections did an episode about toasters and how much better they were in the past. Retro toasters are apparently the way to go.
I like the graphic they linked showing the common birds and who wins in a competition for the feeder. I notice the blue Jay’s and woodpeckers at my feeder often scare everything else away.
Looks like planting natives and providing appropriate sustenance for native species is the takeaway from this. Trying to avoid feeding the invasives that outcompete native birds.
That boot scene was pretty horrific. Although I laughed when I they showed Lucy’s horrified reaction because she and I had the exact same face.
Watched from my kitchen window as my dad and my dog were chased by a skunk. It was exactly like a comedy sketch. First it was dog barking at skunk with dad yelling from the side door. Then it was skunk chasing dog, dog chasing skunk with dad chasing dog. Then the tables were turned, and my dad was being chased by the skunk.
It was glorious. I remember it taking ages before they could get safely inside. My dad was pissed at the time. They both were partially sprayed, but I don’t remember it being that bad of an aftermath. We laugh about it now.
