Thanks for pointing that out. I was actually looking for someone who managed to jailbreak these things and install a custom OS. Figure you cant at this point.
Made my own smart TV with KDE Neon Bigscreen in a Lenovo tiny. Gonna test run it when I replace the wifi.
I think that aligns with the deployment strategy right? They are targeting 27 which is the middle release and not LTS. Get some mileage on it prior to 28 LTS.
But yeah, its all corpo speech when they talk about it. Its probably some executive decision of the likes of “We think Rust is axiomatically better, so let’s implement it” like you said.
My bet is, Canonical as a service provider has a customer that is willing to pay for access to more secure rust utils. Or they want to save resources fixing CVEs.
There’s also the spectre of future security regulations possibly demanding these changes one day too.
I still think its built on someone else’s money. lol
I really don’t see what they would gain by license laundering… They’ll unGPL Debian, Gnome, Wayland and the Linux Kernal next?
If you wanted something out of copyleft, you would have an easier time just building on top of FreeBSD. It does like ~80% of what Ubuntu does already.
I don’t feel too hot about them using MIT either, but I fail to see why they would implement this just to get rid of a GPL component. Seems expensive for nothing.
Rust eliminates memory safety vulnerabilities. It accounts for a large percentage of bugs that need patching in live environments, like servers.
I believe Ubuntu wants to grow in iot or embedded devices so reducing patching needs gives them a competitive edge there.
Why? Its a phone that supports Graphene where Google isn’t trying to kill it?
“GrapheneOS has supported Pixels because Google’s Tensor chips provide the necessary security features, but not all Qualcomm chips offer the same capabilities. Only Qualcomm’s most expensive 8-series processors are comparable from a security standpoint, and those only go in expensive flagship smartphones.”
The price has to do with cpu types. As long as those particular chips remain expensive and top shelf, it won’t reach more budget devices. Its not a malicious choice.
Lenovo is just always killing it. Guess I’m getting one of these next.
Snaps nor anything going into the Ubuntu Desktop is targeted for the average home user. It doesn’t make sense to say any of it is “losing” when Ubuntu Server has such a huge market share.
Snaps really shine in server deployments and support things Flatpaks cannot, like CLI applications or drivers. Really far from a mistake.
I think by extension though, this has made Ubuntu Desktop the best it ever has. You get debian package support, snaps and flatpaks, rust utils and first class support from third party software providers. And all of that is easily transferable to any server deployment.
