  • At the end of the tax year you generally receive tax documentation forms (a W2 or 1099 etc). These tax forms detail your taxable income and possibly any tax credits or exemptions you might be eligible for.

You fill out I9 forms detailing your status (single married etc) and what dependants you have when you start at your place of work and then update those forms as that status changes over time. This information is used by your employer to withhold taxes on your earnings from your pay checks and send that money along to the federal and state governments as necessary.

When you receive your end of year tax forms you enter that tax information into a tax preparation service or paper form, sign it and send it off with what you owe in check form to the IRS, unless you have made accurate tax withholding in which case you have already paid. If you are owed money by the government for overpayment of taxes they will then mail you a check or direct deposit the amount owed to you into an account of your choosing.

There are exceptions if you own a business or have other forms of income for the tax year which you may have to submit a more detailed filing to the IRS with documentation that can absolutely include receipts. But for the most part you use the tax forms you receive to submit your taxable income calculations to the federal or state government and pay or get paid accordingly depending on if you owe them money, or if you are owed money by them for overpayment.

  • As an alternative to using a credit card online is a good idea, as good an idea as any for security and anti-tracking if nothing else. But only if you remember to use them.

One other thing is, (and I’m not positive this is true), but people on disability can’t have over a certain amount of cash. Giving a gift card makes sense in that instance because it no longer counts as cash at that point.

It’s been this way since the inception of the news paper. To sell papers they needed to get people invested in the subjects of the paper. That included giving information about the subject of the articles that other people might relate to. If you’re a mother you’re more likely to be inspired by a mom of 3 who went for a degree in science and ended up becoming a “Trebuchet Master”.

Having been on the other end of this where they picked an applicant from outside so they could pay them less, despite more than one person being more qualified and already working for the company, I’m not sure who’s side to be on here. On the one hand, if you’ve already got someone lined up for the job, this is disingenuous. On the other hand, if someone already working for you can do the job but you don’t want to pay them what they’re worth, that’s just messed up on several levels.

  • The best I’ve got is, it’s complicated. I left reddit very purposely to avoid a lot of the corp side BS and the results of that on the user base. The number of bots and bought/paid accounts alone is enough of a reason not to go back. It’s been getting pretty steadily worse for the last decade at least and while I think the fediverse is kind of toxic, I know for a fact from first hand experience that reddit is more so by a large margin. I want Lemmy to have more users and more communities. I miss reddit for the sheer number of niche communities that haven’t moved over. I don’t have time to start and moderate a community myself. But I don’t want reddit here. I welcome users who want to follow the rules. I don’t welcome wholesale reddit occupation of this space.

I was actually helping an aging coworker who wears a hearing aid set up some features on his phone and connecting his phone to Bluetooth. I was significantly disappointed with the lack of features geared toward those who are hard of hearing. Specifically in driving mode for Android auto. He’s got a newish phone (S23) so it’s not that. And the settings were far too convoluted to find for my tastes.

It really bothered me quite a bit that I couldn’t make the Bluetooth register that he was using a car and therefore speakers, not headphones. And further that the settings for voice prompts in the maps app requires he go into his personal Google settings to change toggles because the app user facing one is only available once you pick a destination and he couldn’t hear it.

Is it too much to ask for a long press shortcut?

No offense but this is kind of what happens in real life too. Nazi shows up to local bar. Barman or owner doesn’t throw them out. Eventually they invite their friends. It winds up being known a Nazi bar. People who don’t want to associate with Nazis no longer visit the bar. This is why intolerance of the intolerant is a thing.
