The sad part is that the Netherlands isn’t really even in control of ASML. They didn’t ban exports to China because the Dutch government suddenly came up with that idea. They did it because Washington ordered it. Same as with the Nexperia debacle.

Well, no, they’ll just put up tariff barriers and import bans on Chinese chips, just like they do now with superior Chinese EVs, solar panels, 5G, etc.

But yeah, otherwise they would be. Because what they don’t mention here is that once China has fully developed this technology they won’t just have one, two or three of these machines, they will mass produce them on an industrial scale, like they do everything else.

Like they did with cars, they will then have city-size “dark factories” churning out chips by the billions. Scale is everything in China. China doesn’t do things small.

Plenty of countries have held elections during wartime. The “constitution” is just a piece of paper. If they wanted to hold elections they could, nothing is physically tying their hands. If they wanted to they could also just change the constitution, the same way they just changed it when they wrote into the constitution that they would join NATO. If they wanted to they could just lift martial law, the same way they just imposed it. They won’t because they’re a fascist dictatorship maintaining power through imposing a repressive military regime on their own citizens. And they don’t want to hold elections because the Nazi junta currently in charge would lose them or have to rig them so blatantly that the country would revolt.

It is pure nonsense to compare Russia with Iran. Russia is a nuclear superpower. Anyone who thinks the same kind of games can be played with them as with Iran is in for a world of hurt.

It must help that the half the country lives in one city.

The same is true of Mongolia. Actually similar population size too. They would also be a good candidate for full renewable transition given their geography. Unfortunately at the moment they’re at maybe 10% renewables. I think the main difference is that Uruguay’s economy is based around a lot of agriculture whereas Mongolia’s around a lot of mining, which is more energy intensive.

This could be a great model for other relatively small, developing countries to follow, but it probably also depends somewhat on geography. Hydropower for example is great but definitely not an option everywhere. Regardless, i do think that renewables are only going to become more and more economically favorable, largely of course thanks to China.

Not at all. You’ll notice basically the entire EU abstained. Ireland’s government is very neoliberal and is aligned with everything that the EU and NATO want. Ireland wants to be part of “the West” and so it has to be pro-colonialist and pro-imperialist. The days when Ireland was a bastion of anti-imperialism are long gone. Anti-imperialist Ireland died when they signed off on the Good Friday Agreement.

Let them try. I think it’s bait, a trap purposely laid by the Russians. If they do it, it will be the biggest poison pill of all time. It would kill the credibility of the European financial system.

Russia would seize billions worth of European assets still in Russia, and they would file lawsuits across multiple jurisdictions, not all of which will be under EU or US control.
