  • That’s true almost everywhere these days. Climate change and pesticides did a number on them.

I used to see hundreds floating around at night. Now I’m lucky to spot one a year.

Also, lovebugs. There were so many everywhere it was difficult to drive sometimes. I haven’t noticed any in years.

  • You can’t just pick up an instrument and sound good. That’s not how they work.

If you want to just be able to make music in a pub without having to work at it, use a phone. Otherwise, you’ll need to put in a great deal of time and effort.

That being out of the way: guitar. It’s an instrument with loads of resources on how to play, doesn’t need to be accompanied by other instruments, and is very controllable when it comes to volume.

And you don’t have to be amazing to play something fun.

Because the corporate Dems are scared when people actually show up to vote in the primary. That’s why we need to keep doing it to replace the Democratic leadership.

Why are you trying so hard to keep people from doing that? Are you an idiot, or are you a troll and actually want things to stay as they are?

  • I teach an underwater photography class at a university. One night a few years ago, we were going to do a night dive and a thunderstorm rolled in. Scuba diving and lightning don’t mix, so we had to cancel the dive.

Students were all 21 or 22, and decided they wanted to go to a local pub for dinner, and asked me to join. I decided to go, and when we got to the pub the door guy was taking his job really seriously. He was examining their IDs super close, bending them and shining a flashlight through them, etc. It was taking a while because he was doing this for each of my students.

When I got to him and started handing over my ID, he just looked at me and said, “You’re good, man.”

  • Lots of things like grey hair, moving more slowly, injuries that I would have bounced away from before instead hurting for weeks or months.

But the one that hit hardest was a breakup I had a little while back. She was the love of my life and I fully intended to marry her, and when she ended it out of nowhere I was sad, but fine. She dumped me, and it sucked, but I also needed to finish a staff report for a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting that night. So I moved on.

The thing that upset me most was that I wasn’t that upset. There was a time in my life when I would have been a mess. But as I’ve aged, my emotions have become more regulated.

I miss being capable of that level of joy and pain.
