  • I know it’s not what your asking but I never used Discord because it’s proprietary and, my friends and I stayed on IRC.

Now IRC is usually just text but we wanted something a bit more modern so we settled for The Lounge. It’s a web IRC client that can display and host videos and images. It can also keep some of the channels history. It brings some modernity to IRC, as we can paste images directly onto a channel.

There’s another similar client called Convos. Apparently it can also do video/voice chat but I never tried.

So I’m not sure we’d switch to an XMPP based protocol, as IRC web clients pretty much just already works for us instead of Discord.

  • The rural town where I grew up had passenger trains for 120 years but they were discontinued in the 90ies. My mother likes to say “when I was a kid we took the train to visit my uncle”. But now getting in or out of there requires a car.

So I had to move in a city for the “privilege” of having barely acceptable transit by European standards. And it still feels weird to take a train multiple times a week when some of my friends and family never did in their entire life.

  • In two parts.

    1. The before map would be of the only high speed train the US currently has, and it’s the Acela Express. So, something like this.

    1. If lots of people are consuming Tylenol in day to day life, and it causes autism, and some autistic people love trains, then the US should have a system like the map posted.

  • Email and IRC push notifications through The Lounge. The rest is disabled. Even amber alerts, because my government uses them for everything. It’s “illegal” to disable them here but with a few commands on adb its possible to disable the service and never have to hear that end of the world alarm for an elderly person missing 200 km away from me.

Why not? I’m not willing to provide links for everything I’ll list, so do what you want with it.

Democracy has failed in the US. They have a king with a dictatorship. They ignore their own laws. They kidnap law abiding citizens, on the streets, at work, in the schools, and send them into concentration camps. They kidnap people from other countries at the border. They invade their own cities with the military. They are sending a flotilla to Venezuela. They are renaming the Department of Defence to the Department of War. They have openly discussed invading Mexico. They have mentioned in the past that Canada should be part of the US. Maine’s Senator sent an open letter to Western Canada and invited them to join the US, like, a week ago.

All this shit is normalized in the US. They just do it little by little and so far people don’t react. They always say “Trump is joking” and “this will not happen” but it ends up happening every time.

  • A decade ago I was whining to my friends that I didn’t like Steam because I was using Linux and Steam was really shitty on that OS at some point. I remember not being able to get the correct keyboard layout in chats, and tons of little annoyances, like not being able to choose where you install games. It was disappointing.

As someone that loves FOSS, I never really liked the model of “not owning my games” but I must admit that it works for most people that don’t care about such things. Valve made huge progress with Steam for Linux over the years, and Proton was indeed a game changer.

I have to tip my hat to them.

  • A few years ago I had a depression and two dreams were coming back repeatedly.

My apartment was a floating in the middle of the ocean and I had to defend it against “invaders”, like my landlords, my parents, some of my “friends”. They were all trying to “attack” me and invade my now lonely isolated floating apartment.

The other one is my fit coworker hunting and running after me to capture me and bring me back forcefully to my parents, from which I was running away, in my mid thirties.

  • Yeah. My parents live in a rural area and coverage has been abysmal for years. They barely even get 4G/LTE signal outside the house. They see ads promising them more speed and more coverage but in reality, it’s going the opposite way for them. And they don’t understand it at all.

Now that the telcos are turning off the 3G network soon in that region, it’s going to be even worse. And because there’s not a lot of people in that rural region, it’s not worth it for the cell companies to improve anything.

  • This looks more like paranoia than tips about privacy. Everyone has a fucking giant TV inside their home. Everyone has hobbies.

Unless you are actively targeted by some psycho… or the police. This just makes everyone thinks everyone else around them is out to rob and steal from them. But being from the US and from the police, it’s not very surprising. You also need a gun to protect yourself and your family from potential home invaders, you never know because the country is full of robbers and violent people! Don’t trust anyone! Just get your kids from school in your giant bulletproof SUV and drive straight to your McMansion where you can barricade yourself with all your precious stuff. In fact you should also take care to hide your McMansion behind a fake facade of poor people’s houses to avoid having less fortunate people target it as a potential place to rob.

Every poor person is plotting to rob you! So if you show clues and get robbed, it’s gonna be your fault and the police will let you know you were stupid for putting a dirt bike sticker on your expensive SUV.

Anyway, this is all just ridiculous in the first place. If someone wants to know you’re not home and steal crap from you, stickers or not, you’re already sitting in your fucking car, while not being home. It’s already a pretty big clue. Otherwise, are home invaders that diligent in the first place? Are they going to stalk people before robbing their home? Really, the stickers on my expensive SUV parked in front of my big house and the big garage is indicating that there might be expensive crap in my house and in my garage? I’m shocked to see how revealing those stickers can be!

In fact, this being from the police just shows how much they profile and judge the shit out of people before even speaking to them.

  • This reminds me of the efforts made against tobacco and for cleaner air in certain areas, but it also reminds me how we do this for other things too.

Radium toothpaste, lead paint and asbestos curtains.

So, as someone that sees cars as a significant source of pollution, from exhausts, brake pads and tires, I find it ironic that some places are banning outdoor smoking in public areas while it’s perfectly acceptable to drive a gas guzzler around and among those places.

Like, I’m so grateful nobody can smoke around me on that restaurant’s terrace, this way I can fully enjoy breathing the pollution from the thousand of cars around.
