You can say anything, but always better to have an account on two or three politically different instances in case you want to critisize USA, China, or any controversial thing in the world.

But if you ain’t an asshole, you’re welcome! Have a nice journey into the fediverse!

Thanks! When I joined, I joined a few instances, so I can see what feels best for me. Have a great day and thanks! :D

What server do you recommend if I don’t want politics (I don’t like how much is on lemmy.ml )

To be fair I just follow a collection of subs and never switch to the local or all tabs. You don’t seem to have to see your own instance all that often if you don’t want to

You can block users or communities, or you can effectively join other instances. I heard good from lemmy.dbzer0.com and lemmy.sdf.org, but it’s best to just go on join-lemmy.org or fediverse.party and finding an instance you resonate with.

(Oh yes, in case you didn’t know, the fediverse is not limited to lemmy, and is a huge system of many protocols and systems)

On federated social media, things changes very fast, and you will probably move to another instance from time to time. On the first hand, small instance are chill, they can be quite dead sometimes, but that’s where you will find peace from politics. On the other hand, big instances are active, but get sometimes involved in useless drama, and that’s where it often gets political.

Lemmy.ml, I know it, is a bit annoying on some terms, like the sensorship of some swears like “motherfucker” or of chinese criticism, but they haven’t been bothering me so i didn’t really leave. They are federated to a lot of instances and that’s a good point. Am also on a very small server with a dozen of people, there are plenty of servers like that if you dig a bit.

Well idk why did i wrote that much, hope it’ll be useful at least, and that the swear won’t get me banned.

        See ya cyberspace anon!

First thing, Lemmy is in need of content and likes recruiting. Hence you got 315 replies, heh.

Basically, if you aren’t a bigot, you don’t have to worry about what you say. You can be politically incorrect in any direction and not get a global/shadowban from the Fediverse.

Each instance has its own flavor and etiquette.

So when I came here from Reddit I didn’t know what to pick, so I picked .world figuring it would be bigger or something. Over time it seems like people are saying that .ml is just horrible. I actually thought that .ml stood for militant full of right wing tankies ( don’t know the exact definition of that either). Lately someone essentially berated me for being on the worst one. Just now, I went to the little pull out on the side to see how to change it and what the options were and didn’t even see how to do that.

Bottom line, I have no clue how any of this works. I just wanted to see some interesting content, news from a different perspective, some fun memes, and some cool comments. I don’t even understand what fediverse means other than it’s kind of like borg technology, meaning that the information is spread across a bunch of servers instead of a single point of failure.

Maybe one day I’ll look into all of this, but seriously I have a life. As long as I open it and get what I want, I’m good. I almost never post because they are almost always removed for violating some rule. The last time I posted a question on a Linux forum and was getting some really good answers only to have it removed for violating a rule I didn’t even understand. LOL.

    Good luck to you.

“Tankie” is just a pejorative for Marxists in the form of a strawman laden with contradictions. Marxism-Leninism is by no means right-wing, but that just goes to show you how ridiculous the strawman is. Lemmy.world is more liberal, anti-communist, so there’s lots of red scare fearmongering over there.

As a side note, if you want a broader user experience, it might be better to make an account on sopuli.xyz or something like it that doesn’t block the major leftist instances like Hexbear.net and Lemmygrad.ml, which Lemmy.world unfortunately does.

Try shopping around for different instances, the one you’re on can actually see a huge number of communities that accounts on Lemmy.world can’t see, as an example. One of the better ways to use Lemmy is to either scroll an instance you vibe with locally, or by using a broad account and browsing by subscribed communities.

Have a great day to you too!

Lemmy is majority socialist and not communist. So as most liberals are, they are destined to hate on each other because neither side can pass the ‘purity tests’ each side cooks up.

Y’all deserve each other most of the time.

All communists are at first socialists, communism is a post-socialist mode of production. Liberals on the other hand support capitalism, and do unfortunately outnumber the socialists/communists. It isn’t about “purity tests,” there are fundamental disagreements among people that cannot be reconciled.

Instances are a big difference. Most interfaces, apps, clients for Lemmy will show you the instance (server) in which a user registered their account. There are kind of “instance wars” inside Lemmy, because, between these “wars” they believe an instance, in general, bears their flag and support some kind of ideology.

Please, talk to other users as people, no matter their instance, don’t ever judge them for that.

It’s basically the same. Lemmy is kind of what reddit felt like before it got huge and astroturfed, it’s smaller which can be as much a benefit as a detriment depending what your after. I find interaction here tends to feel more human than reddit, on reddit comment threads especially in political subreddits you already know what the comments are gonna say before you get there, here i feel as though there is a bit more genuine thought. That being said Lemmy is not immune to echo chambers or trolls, as any bit of the internet is. Just use as you would use reddit honestly and just know your likely not to see as much content, but the content you see will get a more GENUINE feeling interaction. That’s my take anyhow.

the major benefit is there isn’t enough of a dipshit brigade to drown out the genuine smart people who are saying insightful things… yet

but i’ve been here over a year, and the dipshit brigade is growing rapidly. soon enough they will become mods and start banning anyone who doesn’t agree with their dipshit agenda. but at least their power will be limited to only banning you on their particular instance.

reddit used to have lots of cool diverse voices, and that all ended once it became popular enough that your parents new what it was and corporations were desperate to use it to shrill and advertise.

personally i felt like anytime i sub went over 100,000 subscribers it rapidly went to shit. if it was under 100K it was usually a pretty cool place that allowed productive and interesting disagreement and various POV. then once the userbase grew the mods would always become ban happy for anyone they didn’t like who didn’t agree with their agenda/beliefs, and would hypocritically start lecturing users on tolerance and diversity and non abusive behaviour, while banning people over personal disagreements they had with users. i remember i once got banned in cycling subreddit because is said I thought Doritos were gross and the mod basically told me to go f myself for not like the same snack food as he did. lol

I’ve noticed that if you’re center or center-right here you get downvoted to oblivion or outright have your comments deleted by mods. It’s not really advertised, people have to find out the hard way. At least reddit has TrueUnpopularOpinion for people across the political spectrum to discuss with each other, and there’s nothing similar here at all.

according to other commenters, it’s different across instances. I personally don’t like to talk about politics, except how it affects me, so I think I’ll be fine. also reddit is weird no matter what sub you go, and according to others, the mods tend to be more chill here, so if comments get removed, chances are (ACCORDING TO OTHERS)

        A) You’re not adding to discussion

        B) You’re being rude

        C) You’re on an instance that doesn’t like your opinion, swap instances possibly?

I don’t know much about lemmy though, I’m new to it. Correct me where I’m wrong.

Other users have also said if someone is not worth talking to, they downvote them. If you come across as toxic, mean, etc, to me, I will not interact with you.

Honestly not really that different from Reddit. My only warning is make sure to check the community a post is from that you see on ‘main’. There’s a couple female only communities and holy shit do they get pissed if you accidentally comment because you found a topic interesting enough to but didn’t check that it was a female only community.

I was making light of your question … partly to have a bit of fun … and partly to show that the community enjoys sharing these silly little bits of movie quotes that act like memes. The one I was using is from the movie “The Naked Gun” (the original film from 1988 with Leslie Nielson)

A lot of the meme communities enjoy old slapstick movie content as there is a lot of memeable content there … films like ‘The Naked Gun’ series, Hot Shots, any of the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.

Don’t be afraid to test your boundaries, comment as you like but with an open mind and kind heart … people will let you know if you’ve said or implied anything negative or positive. Don’t be discouraged if you get no response either … it’s not a popularity contest. The longer you stay, the more you comment, the more you get to know people and the more they get to know you and eventually you become a regular part of the community.

Welcome to Lemmy and welcome to the fediverse.

It’s pretty much the same but on Reddit it’s ok to be combative and rude with people as long as public opinion approves. Also most of the posts are bots so you aren’t actually being rude to a person there most times.

Please don’t do that here. There are way less bots here so please remember you are speaking to actual humans.

Also political discourse is mostly ok here. Same rules apply with rudeness though. On Reddit you will get quarantined or shadow banned quickly with anything politically charged.

By ratio, there are way more communists than on Reddit. There are three major groups, anarchists, Marxist-Leninists, and liberals, and each instance tends to have more of one or maybe 2 than the others. Getting a feel for instance culture goes a long way.

I’m a .ml because it was the second most popular instance when I joined, and I refuse to be bullied by other people tribalism to change to a different instance.

(Although that /s… if you tried to joke with me, then I’m sorry, I was/am too tired to understand it)
