    Iran is preparing to break ground on a massive 5,000-megawatt solar power plant in Isfahan province, backed by an estimated $2.8 billion in private sector investment, as reported by WANA.

    According to Ebrahim Karimi, head of the energy desk at the Isfahan Governor’s Office, the sprawling 6,000-hectare complex in the city of Kuhpayeh will be deployed across three distinct phases consisting of two 2,000-MW packages and one 1,000-MW package.

    Once fully operational, regional officials state that the facility is designed to become the world’s largest solar power installation, overtaking current leading sites in nations like India and China.

    Proponents note that the mega-project will supply roughly 10 percent of Iran’s monthly electricity demand and significantly alleviate severe grid deficits by cutting peak summer power outages by half.

    As someone whose been on the bus drive between Isfahan and Qum, I think solar power is a perfect fit for Iran. There’s absolutely loads of potential for it, and I can see Iran being a model of transition from an oil economy to a renewable giant.
