United States Ambassador to Turkiye and Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack publicly broke with official US foreign policy by stating that Israel’s continued occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights violates both international law and United Nations resolutions.
The remarks directly contradict the 2019 decision by former US President Donald Trump to formally recognize so-called Israeli ‘sovereignty’ over the strategic plateau.
The Golan Heights is currently occupied by roughly 20,000 Israeli settlers alongside an indigenous population of approximately 26,000 predominantly Druze residents who maintain their Syrian identity.
