I mean, we do still have a lot of politicians saying that it’s super dangerous. Söder is a good example, always saying how bad it is and that he doesn’t want drugs for Germany. He also drinks beer all the time btw. His party (CDU/CSU), who have been in power for the last 16 (or something) years before the current government also said the first thing they’re going to do when they’re back in power is make it illegal again.

I’m going to finish school soon and I want to drive a car when I have a job and can afford it. I’ve used public transportation for the past 3 years and will probably still use it in the future when it’s not too inconvenient but a 30 min drive to work taking 1 hour instead, where I spend 30 minutes just waiting, sucks. This weekend I drove to a friend. It would have taken 30 minutes by car but it took me 2 hours with public transport because I had to wait a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes. The issue isn’t public transportation itself but that the government was trying to save as much money as possible and it is getting better with the new government but there is still so much to do and it will take time.

I hope GTK and GNOME (or is GTK part of GNOME?) adopt this, I didn’t even know just how bad the inefficiency with todays cursors is. Having a single svg for each cursor and rendering it server-side makes so much more sense.

You could install it without a desktop and then manually install only the packages for Plasma with Wayland but idk if that’a really worth the effort

Couldn’t images and videos just be loaded from the instance they were uploaded to instead of getting copied to each instance? It would work almost the same as uploading it to a file hoster but it would be a lot easier usability wise and illegal content would still only have to be deleted at a single point.

It started getting popular years ago and that’s when me an my friends switched to it too (back when I didn’t know shit about privacy). You gotta keep in mind the alternatives back then were Skype, which was meant for 1 to 1 calls, had shit audio quality and issues all the time and TeamSpeak, which was complicated because you needed a server (we were kids, we only knew what a server was from Minecraft) and had a text chat that was only a small part of the bottom of the window that was full of connected and disconnected messages, so I actually didn’t even know you could write in that. TeamSpeak’s interface also isn’t exactly good-looking or very intuitive. Then came Discord, you could create a server for you and your friends for free, you saw who of your friends was online and playing what, you could see when someone was in a voice channel and could just join, you had multiple text chats where you could easily send a link or memes while playing and you could easily share your screen with the others. It was a major improvement over the other two. I know that it sucks from a privacy standpoint but there’s good reasons why people started using it.

I agree with the others that testing in a VM (Virtual Machine) first is probably a good idea. Keep in mind that because of missing 3D acceleration inside a VM things like desktop animations might not work.

As for distros, I’d recommend Mint or Fedora. I personally use Fedora.

What’s also important is the desktop environment you choose. The most popular ones are GNOME and KDE Plasma. GNOME is closer to MacOS than Windows and is made to just work while KDE Plasma has a layout similar to Windows out of the box but is very customizable and has a lot of options. Ubuntu uses GNOME but they make quite a few changes to it. Fedora uses GNOME by default but there’s also a KDE Plasma version, I think. Mint doesn’t have these 2 by default, you can always install them if you want to afterwards tho. The 3 options Mint gives you are also more Windows-like but I haven’t tried them myself, so I can’t tell you much about them. A VM would give you the ability to just install them, try them out and delete them afterwards. I personally use GNOME btw.

When my monitor is on stand-by the led slowly blinks and every time it turns on I can hear it. Aside from that, I don’t think so.

To work on it from different devices, use features like issues, basically the same reason people use it for public repos instead of just uploading it as a zip somewhere. Sometimes you have stuff you don’t want to release to the public or it’s just not ready to release to the public yet.

Godot is honestly just so much nicer to use. I switched to it back in the day because of that after using Unreal and Unity. I didn’t even know what open source was at that point, I just liked it more.

I think you can get tiling on both KDE Plasma and GNOME. I know it exists for Plasma but not sure about GNOME.

I wish GNOME had DRM on Wayland, kinda annoying to always have to switch to Xorg for VR
