I think chairs and tables are insufficiently different - people would end up using one as a substitute for the other. I think a more interesting question would be what if you were required to magically eliminate all perfectly level planes (tables, chairs, beds), or eliminate all slanted planes (ramps, screws, lazy boys)

One advantage as I understand it between a worker cooperative and an ESOP is that the worker cooperative has a one person one vote system. It avoids the issue you mention about not having voting shares. I worked at a place with an ESOP and just the managers had shares. And even there they didn’t prevent the business being sold to private equity. Sure they got paid out but now that previously family owned business is part of a monopoly in our industry.

For reciprocal holidays like Christmas, giving cash maybe gets a little too close to exposing the pointlessness. I give you cash, then you give me cash, what are we doing here? And what if I gave you less than you gave me?

A gift card does indicate I thought a little bit about what the recipient might like, even if I know it would be impractical for me to make a choice on the recipient’s behalf, or that my gift wouldn’t be sufficient to cover a typical purchase in whole. (Thinking like gaming systems, expensive handbags etc)

All that said, I generally agree, I’m not crazy about gift cards.

I’ve seen a few people shit talk discord without expanding, so I will: it’s a proprietary “public space” that’s not web searchable. I don’t mind something like a community/subreddit oriented around a physical place, but I try to avoid supporting spaces that are owned by private capital. Of course that’s nearly impossible, but there are degrees of enclosure.

I learned cursive but I’m sure have forgotten how to write it, especially some of the capital letters. Thing is learning it now is really just for backwards compatibility. Yes, it’s faster to write in cursive when writing by hand, but how often is that coming up these days, for most people?
